Before & After: Twin Bedroom Gets an Update With a Nod to Canada

the small touch of a Canadian flag creates the decor of this boys room

We hope everyone had a wonderful Canada Day spending time with family and friends while enjoying the great outdoors. Canada Day is one of my favourite holidays. We’re proud to be Canadian and we’re not afraid to let our love show.

When we were called in to makeover this guest bedroom, we thought it was the perfect space to get some Canada going.

Our clients were still living in the family home and although the children were long gone, the space was used when the grandchildren slept over.

It had been several years since the bedroom was updated, so it was time to add some fun. We came across a wonderful Hudson Bay Blanket that was stored in the dresser. This became the inspiration for the new look.

We wanted to make the room a little on the masculine side because they are a family of mostly boys. Instead of playing up the colours in the Hudson Bay blanket, we concentrated on the historical look.

Twin brass beds with a few Canadian accents make a perfect guest room for when the grandsons come over.

The Details

We’re starting to use a lot more wall mounted lights beside the bed. For this room we chose pharmacy lights to enhance the vintage feel. They provide direct light for reading in bed and free up space on the night table.

These brass headboards were stored in the basement, and we loved them so much, we decided to make them a feature of the room.

The night table is an old family trunk that adds that authentic touch. The candle holders are Martha Sturdy originals. Wooden spinning tops are casually laid on the trunk. These toys never loose their appeal.

The shadow box with the beautiful boat is another cherished family piece. We love the energy that these treasures give off.

The scalloped valance was updated with a more current box pleat. Notice the button detailing. Like we always say, it’s the details that make the design. Before and after of a more current valance. Notice the button detailing.

We kept the bedding fabrics to flannels, velvets and wools. Using plaid on plaid gives it that ‘didn’t-try-too-hard’ look.

Lastly, we added the Canadian flag cushion. If you look at the room, you’ll notice that everything is pretty neutral to allow the flag cushion to be the star. The great thing is that it’s just one cushion. In a few years, if the boys want a change, we can easily switch out the cushions and get a whole new look.

The homeowner was thrilled with her Canadian inspired guest bedroom. And better yet, the boys loved it. One thing I have noticed through the years is how much children really appreciate a well appointed space. You wouldn’t think teen boys would even care about stuff like this, but they did, and they were really appreciative of the new look.
