In honour of Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be a good time to talk about the colour red. Sure pink, white and even lavender might be considered Valentine colours, but everyone knows red is the colour of love.
Red is exciting and glamorous. It’s seen as a little dangerous, which I think adds to its appeal. Think of a woman wearing bold red lipstick. Her allure is that she is both feminine and powerful at the same time.
Red is a statement colour. It has been used for thousands of years and continues to be a popular colour in the world today. Red in decor can be traced back to the earliest cave paintings and continued to be widely used. We see it in the art and decoration of Ancient Rome, the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, paintings of the Renaissance and the lacquerware of China.
A touch of red in any room makes the other colours around it sharper. Both men and women like red, so it has always been a go-to colour for interiors. The fun thing about red is that it can do so many styles.
Think country style and red comes to mind.
Red buffalo plaid or red and white check tablecloths set the stage for down home decor. How about our own iconic Hudson Bay blanket? Place this in a room and the red stands proud.
Red can be glamorous and sophisticated.
I don’t think I’d ever tire of the pops of red in this room below. This is red at it’s classic best.
Red can be fun.
Whether it’s the stools below, or the tile and wainscotting, red adds excitement and a bit of cheekiness.
Unlike other decorating colours, red has staying power. When used properly in a room, it doesn’t look dated. I think red is truly a classic colour.
If you’re trying to mix in some red, remember that it it’s not just White or Grey that has undertones. Red does too. If you’re not sure what an undertone is, read my blog post on Matched Undertones and you’ll be sure to pick the right shade.
