One day I received a call from the loveliest lady who just wasn’t happy in her condo. When her husband passed away, she sold the family home and moved into a beautiful condo for seniors. It was a nice unit, but she said it just didn’t feel like her.
When we got to her condo and rang the buzzer she said she would come down and let us in. We were met by the funkiest senior I ever laid eyes on. She was wearing a beautiful outfit, accessorized with a leopard skin scarf. She had cool glasses and wore funky jewellery. When she opened the door to her condo, no wonder she wasn’t feeling it. Her place was blah and dark and drab. NOTHING like her.
Debbie and I looked around and saw that she did have some very nice things. We talked to her about how she used her space, daily habits such as, where she liked to sit, did she eat at the table or the counter, and how often she entertained. We were so excited to use what she had, that we started moving everything around.
This means that we didn’t get any before pics. We do this a lot. You think by now we would get the pictures, but it’s so easy to get caught in the excitement and forget.
We try to use everything that’s there already. We move the furniture so it functions better and solves the problems. This is a beautiful space, but it’s dark. The sofa used to be on the wall where the desk is, but we changed it up so our client can sit nearer the window and get the natural light. You can see our lady’s legs in the photo above. She’s trying out her new layout.
Our client above was so thrilled with her new layout that she wanted us to bring in some decor accessories, new lights and even some wallpaper. We really wanted to funk up her place to match her awesome personality. And as she herself said, “Let’s get it done right away. After all, I’m 84 years old and I don’t have time to waste!”
The electrician hadn’t been by to install all the new light fixtures in the foyer and living room yet, but you’ll get the idea of how the space was arranged. We used lots of lamps due to the lack of natural light in the space.
When we talked with our lady, she admitted to often eating her meals in the tv room, which is the 2nd bedroom. Originally, the dining table sat where the sofa is now, but more in the middle of the room. The table was placed here because that’s where the chandelier was placed. We solved this problem quickly by getting a new semi-flush fixture and not letting a hanging light dictate where the dining table had to be. Since the dining table was used maybe once every two weeks when her daughter and family came for Sunday dinner, we suggested cozying it up in front of the fireplace and simply pulling it out when needed.
Sometimes it takes a fresh pair of eyes on a space to be able to make the most of it. If you feel that a Design Style Package may be for you, click here and send us an email. We’d love to help you feel good in your home.
