There’s no more affordable way to change your home then with paint. Adding colour on the walls is a powerful way to add warmth, make a statement, or create a calm oasis. Sometimes the budget won’t allow for a total renovation, but a little bit of paint will give you a total refresh. Don’t believe that the change will be huge? Check out the blog, See What a Can of Paint Can Do.
For years we’ve been using dark paint to highlight certain features like railings or windows. It adds a bit of a punch to a room, and makes architectural details stand out.
I’m glad we’re heading over to the dark side. After a few years of keeping everything neutral, rich colour and pattern are looking fresh again. Bold and saturated hues can be intoxicating. That’s not to say that it’s the only way to go. Benjamin Moore has named Simply White OC-117 as 2016 Colour of the Year.
Pantone’s 2016 choice is actually two colours, and neither one is dark. They’ve chosen Rose Quartz and Serenity, a blend of cool and warm shades. Some people are calling it the year of Baby Pantone, and I can definitely see why.
If the thought of doing your walls in pastels is making you queasy, then your time has come. Rich dark hues are steadily making their way to the top of the trend lists. Those of us who have always loved dark colours know that these rich shades are highly versatile and are really a neutral.
As always, nature is a huge inspiration. Think of the midnight blue of a night sky, or the almost-black green of lush forests. Mother nature knows how to do contrast.
To start you on your journey into the world of the dark, here are a few of our favourite night shades from Benjamin Moore.
If you’re a little apprehensive to paint an entire room, start with something small, like a door or a window trim.
Or you can be a bit bolder and do a feature wall. Before you know it, you’ll be wanting an entire room done in a rich hue, like this room from the 2015 Fall West Elm Catalogue.
If there’s one piece of colour advice we give everyone, it’s that you have to go with what you love. There is no wrong colour choice…there are just wrong combinations of colours. To keep it current, stylish and unique, it really is all in the mix.
