Simply put, function refers to the way a room is used.
For example, when one is designing a home for resale, function matters little. The main purpose in this case is to show off the beautiful features of a house.
However, when we live in a room, it does matter that our favourite chair allows us to look out the window or that a reading lamp is close by the sofa. Understanding how a room is used makes it easy to understand what it needs.
A room that is not set up to accommodate the people that inhabit it is really of no use.
Designers will ask many questions in order to get to know a client before any work is started. This ensures that the newly designed room will fit the lifestyle of those that spend every day in it.
By first concentrating on the function of a room, a sense of order and peacefulness will emerge.
