If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know that I love summer. I’m one of those people that freeze all year, so I wait patiently for the months of July and August so that I can warm up. Besides the hot weather, I love everything about summer…the get togethers, the long days, having the kids around, hanging out at the lake. It’s all good.
Summer is lighter and easier. Even when my kids were little, they figured out that almost anything goes in summer…we don’t do routine and we don’t do structure. We live differently in the summer. It’s actually a lot more fun.
At our home, we even change up the decor to reflect our carefree attitude. I wanted to share with you 8 ways our family does easy breezy summer decorating.
Stripes were first spotted on sailors in France around 1850. Apparently the navy-and-white-striped shirt made it easier to spot those sailors that fell overboard. Since then, this simple design has become a classic. I like to add a few nautical stripes to our decor. This year I picked up a thick cotton runner for our dining table. And like every summer, I make sure each of my boys has at least one classic striped cotton tee in their wardrobe.
We can’t get enough green in the summer months. I like to bring some of that green inside because it adds life. Putting a fresh arrangement on the table is the perfect summer accent. We keep a small pot of basil by the stove and use it for our spaghetti sauce and bruschetta.
Okay I’ll admit it – I never did like the seat cushions below that came with my patio set . Do any sets come with nice cushions??? However, I never did get around to changing them. This was going to be the year…but I couldn’t find any I loved. And to top it off, these ones fit perfectly and they aren’t the least bit worn. So instead, I picked up a several new outdoor toss cushions from Pier 1…and they were on sale too!!! I wanted a fresher look, so I choose a white and red striped cushion. Notice that there isn’t any red in the seat cushion, but the new orange cushion blends it all together.
I swap out my cushions for the seasons – do you? Since I don’t want to store a ton of cushions, I usually only swap out one out of each grouping. On the bed below, I took out a brown cable knit cushion and replaced it with the beige and denim coloured striped one. Because after all, nothing says summer like stripes!!!!
When I was doing my gardens at the lake, I wanted to have climbing vines. Clematis and Virginia Creeper are two of my favourite. The gardens are very rustic looking, so I needed a lattice that looked natural. We went twig collecting and I put together these lattices. The vines grew like crazy and last year looked looked spectacular. I don’t know what happened this winter, but the Clematis didn’t come back. I think maybe I should have covered the roots for the winter. Well the lattice still looks good, and the new plants are growing nicely.
Here are two other cute ideas. The star was made by my friend Sheri. This summer I’m going to make one and put it outside near the gardens. Love the DIY Tic Tac Toe – found that one on pinterest. My boys and I want to make that one too.
There’s nothing sadder then a table with nothing as a centrepiece. There’s all kinds of pretty things that look nice sitting on the table, but a stack of little plates is my choice for summer. They look pretty and you’ll use them all the time. In the summer I find we eat breakfast and lunch at different times. We’re not as structured with these meals and the kids make their own food. Many times they would make a sandwich and not use a plate. Now with the plates front and centre, it’s easy for them to remember that food goes on a plate.
Curling up with a super warm blanket is great for winter – not so nice for summer. In the springtime, I put away the heavy wool throws and bring out my cotton and linen ones. With it’s trademark rope pattern, cotton cable knit throws have become a summer classic. They look good in every home, from beach houses to rustic retreats.
When the weather is nice, I just want to be outside all the time. Unfortunately, there’s still lots of indoor stuff that needs doing. I found that if I bring bits of nature inside, it cheers me up. Rocks, driftwood, wildflowers – we bring these treasures inside for our summer decor. Even my husband has a pile of rocks at his office from our trip to we took to Duluth, Minnesota.
A few small changes and your home will be ready for summer. Sometimes it’s just getting in there, cleaning out the clutter, changing out cushions, and adding a few summery decor items. That’s all it takes to make your home have that summer feel.
Check back next Sunday for our new blog. Have a great week and enjoy these beautiful summer days.
